The introduction of Creole in schools is being debated. The Primary Schools Employees Union has stepped into the breach discuss of some ambiguities about the teaching of this optional language in schools.
.
In a letter addressed to the Ministry of Education, the union's leaders including President Premnath Gunness and Jugdish Lollbeeharry, technical adviser to the union asserts that the proposals made by that department in a circular dated 21 February are not clear the following reasons:
.
(i) The Ministry proposes that teachers recruited in 2008 "could be invited to express their interest in teaching" the subject.
.
"That may be the first time teachers in a particular cohort are asked to support a particular topic. "
.
The union does not understand why this decision was taken, they say;
.
(ii) The proposal to require those teachers to work in more than one school is "absolutely incomprehensible" and the department needs to explain again or re-examine this issue.
.
(iii) Teachers who have been nominated for the teaching of this language can be frustrated because they are deprived of their free time.
.
(iv) The circular did not mention what incentives will be awarded to the category of teachers who teach the Creole language.
.
(v) The department must recruit a new category of teachers to ensure the successful introduction of this subject.
.
(vi) Circular "is ambiguous", some teachers refuse to get involved.
The union insists that the teaching of this subject is not imposed on all teachers who are already in charge of classes.
.
The union intends to make new proposals to the Ministry of Education in the future.
